Goals

Prepare detailed design and symbol libraries following ARAMCO standards. Configure and manage 150,000 PI tags for expanded data needs. Replicate and deploy 2,000 PI Vision graphics for visualization. Develop 150 PI Datalink Excel reports for operational insights.

Challenges

Managing accurate configuration of a very large number of PI tags. Coordinating replication and deployment of complex PI Vision graphics. Ensuring robust, redundant OPC interfaces for uninterrupted data flow. Meeting stringent ARAMCO design and quality requirements.

Solutions

Led kickoff and design review meetings with ARAMCO and Honeywell. Developed a comprehensive symbol library and detailed design documentation. Configured PI tags and offsite graphics for consistent quality. Installed redundant OPC DA Interfaces for reliable data acquisition.

Results

Deployed scalable, reliable PI System infrastructure supporting plant growth. Enhanced operational visibility with comprehensive graphics and reports. Enabled seamless, fault-tolerant data acquisition via redundant OPC interfaces. Met ARAMCO’s quality standards with full client satisfaction.

ARAMCO Expand Abu Ali Plant

In 2023, EMI was contracted to support ARAMCO’s Abu Ali Plant expansion by delivering a robust PI System infrastructure capable of handling increased operational demands. The project required configuring an extensive number of PI tags—up to 150,000—to ensure comprehensive data acquisition across the expanded facility. Additionally, EMI replicated and deployed 2,000 PI Vision graphics, significantly improving process visualization for operators and decision-makers.

To complement this, EMI developed 150 Excel reports leveraging PI Datalink to provide critical operational insights. Ensuring uninterrupted data flow was paramount, so multiple redundant PI OPC DA Interfaces were configured and connected to redundant OPC servers to guarantee fault tolerance and high availability. The project was executed with close coordination alongside Honeywell and ARAMCO teams, including several critical design reviews to ensure alignment with ARAMCO’s strict quality and design standards.

The system underwent rigorous testing phases culminating in successful Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), confirming the infrastructure’s performance, reliability, and compliance. This deployment has significantly enhanced ARAMCO’s ability to efficiently monitor and control the expanded plant operations through a modern, scalable PI System.
