PI Graphics Conversion and Tag ConfigurationIn 2022, QAPCO (Qatar Petrochemical Company) engaged EMI to carry out a full-scale modernization of its operational graphics by converting a wide set of existing and new DCS displays into AVEVA PI Vision. This project aimed to unify real-time process visualization across all major production units, improve data transparency, and enhance accessibility for operators and engineers. |
The project included converting graphics from multiple DCS platforms—both current and legacy systems—into PI Vision. EMI’s team worked across four major areas: Ethylene Plant (EP), Utility Plant (UP), Vinyl Plant, and legacy GE-based systems in the Vinyl and Utility units.
The scope involved not only graphical updates but also the precise creation and mapping of PI tags to ensure every data point was live, accessible, and synchronized with current plant operations. One of the critical aspects of the project was ensuring visual and functional consistency between the DCS environment and PI Vision, especially as the plants were actively undergoing control system updates. EMI collaborated closely with QAPCO teams to review, modify, and validate the accuracy of all graphical elements and underlying tag structures. The GE graphics migration posed additional complexity due to differing data models, but EMI managed a seamless transition without interrupting plant workflows.
By project completion, QAPCO had a refreshed, unified PI Vision platform that mirrored live operational states, improved navigation across production assets, and significantly enhanced situational awareness for plant personnel. The successful delivery of this initiative positioned QAPCO for better real-time monitoring, quicker diagnostics, and stronger alignment between operations and digital systems. | ![]() |
