S-CHEM Compression Insight & Additional Graphics

In 2016, EMI executed two complementary projects for S-CHEM, located in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, aimed at significantly enhancing the efficiency and usability of their PI System. The first project, Compression Insight, focused on addressing the challenge of balancing data integrity with storage efficiency. With over 30,000 PI tags involved, this task required a detailed analysis and tuning of the data compression settings tailored to each individual signal’s characteristics. The goal was to optimize the use of storage while ensuring that critical process data remained accurat and reliable for operational needs.

EMI deployed the Compression Insight tool, which continuously monitored the compression performance of PI tags and generated daily reports suggesting optimal exception and compression deviation settings. This enabled S-CHEM’s engineering team to make informed adjustments that improved system responsiveness and storage utilization without compromising data quality. Simultaneously, EMI expanded on a previous graphics conversion initiative by converting additional key Distributed Control System (DCS) graphics from different platforms into PI ProcessBook. This effort was essential to enhance operator visualization and control by providing seamless, real-time access to critical process data via standardized PI ProcessBook displays. The project included converting graphics for multiple process and utility areas, ensuring that the converted displays maintained functional accuracy and operational reliability.

Together, these projects not only improved the PI System’s technical performance but also enhanced the user experience for operators and engineers at S-CHEM. The refined compression strategies helped reduce storage costs and system load, while the enriched graphical displays contributed to better process monitoring and operational decision-making. The positive reception by plant personnel has fostered continued collaboration between EMI and S-CHEM.
